Study & workshop

The arm outlives the screen it holds

The mount section of the Study & workshop shelf. A monitor arm is the rare desk object with no obsolescence clock: VESA 75×75 and 100×100 have carried screens for decades, so one arm holds four successive monitors. That makes its cost per year a fraction of the screen's — and makes the warranty on the gas spring, not the casting, the thing you are actually buying.

The router keeps working long after it stops being safe

The network section of the Study & workshop shelf. A router does not wear out — it stops receiving security updates while continuing to light up exactly as before. Since April 2024 the maker has to publish how long that support lasts, and may not shorten it afterwards. That published date, not the Wi-Fi generation, is the number that decides what the router costs per year.

Worn & carried

Darn Tough vs Smartwool — the sock is similar, the promise is not

Two American merino names, near-identical prices, and two promises that could hardly differ more: one maker replaces a sock you wore through, for life, with no receipt; the other's guarantee ends at two years and asks for the paper. We read both guarantee pages closely — what is covered, what the claim costs you, what comes back — and judge the promise rather than the knit, which is the one thing a buyer can verify before wearing either.

Herman Miller vs Okamura — one warranty names the casters, the other names them consumables

The two makers most often weighed against each other for a serious task chair, compared on the one document a buyer can verify from any country: the warranty. Herman Miller signs twelve years on every moving part — casters, gas cylinder, tilt — labour included. Okamura tiers its promise by part: structure up to eight years on eligible models, mechanisms two, surfaces one, and the casters excluded from the start as consumables. Read from both makers' own pages, with every regional caveat named.

Daily tools

Leatherman vs Victorinox — the number, the word, and the same fine print

The multi-tool record called the SwissTool the Wave+'s only serious rival and left the warranty comparison at a word: twenty-five years versus life. This record reads both warranty pages closely and finds the surprise in the fine print — the two promises are the same species. Neither covers normal wear; both cover the maker's defects. What actually separates the tools is $15, an ounce, a replaceable wire cutter, and one clause Victorinox's own product page leaves ambiguous.

Editors' notes

The guarantee ledger — four things 'lifetime' means, read across seventeen makers

An editors' note that walks the shelves with one question: when a maker writes lifetime, what did it actually sign? Read across seventeen guarantee pages — socks to luggage to cast iron to lamps — the word resolves into four different promises: wear covered with no paper; a defect warranty wearing the word; a promise that dies with the first owner; and a promise gated behind registration or a receipt. The ledger, in one place, with the catch named for each.

The optic with nothing scheduled to wear — Nikon's Monarch binoculars and the seal that holds

The fourth record on the Out & about shelf: nitrogen-purged, sealed binoculars — the Nikon Monarch M5 and M7 — read as a structural buy-once case, where the durability is not a burr to swap or a seam to reopen but the plain absence of a wear part. We read Nikon's warranty terms clause by clause, including the exclusion that matters most: Nikon Care's extended coverage does not reach binoculars at all. The honest counter-case is a single trip, where a cheap pair is the right tool.

Sound & light

Replace the bulb, not the lamp — the Anglepoise Original 1227

The lamp record the Sound & light shelf promised at its opening: the Anglepoise Original 1227, in production since 1935, whose moving mechanism is three constant-tension springs the maker still sells as a £10 service kit — beside switch bars, linkage fittings, and rewire kits for lamps built 1938–1968. We correct the opening note's ledger with the maker's own list ($320 US — about $11–12 a year over thirty years, below the headphone record's $25), read the lifetime guarantee's 90-day registration clause closely, and keep the counter-case at full strength: any working lamp already reads just fine, and this record is about a mechanism earning decades, not about upgrading light.

Sixty years, two materials, one seam — the Lamy 2000

The third specific record on the Daily tools shelf, and the pen its opening note promised: the Lamy 2000, developed in 1966 with a former Braun designer and produced — by the maker's own count — for 58 years in the same polycarbonate and stainless steel. We bring the object back from the shelf it was crossed to, set the ~$9.30-a-year figure beside the multi-tool's $4.80 and the Cobra's $1.50, read the piston's bottled-ink economics from Lamy's own prices, and keep the honest verdict the loop was always going to close on: the $37 Safari stays the rational default, and the 2000 is bought for the design, not the arithmetic.

Kitchen

Replace the burr, not the machine — a coffee grinder (Baratza, 1Zpresso)

The first kitchen appliance on the shelf, and the rare one built to be opened: the burr coffee grinder. We weigh Baratza (Washington State, founded in the late 1990s) against the hand grinders that have no motor to fail, set the roughly $14-a-year floor in the series ledger beside the skillet's $1.30, the kettle's sub-$100, the wok's ~$3.70, and the Dutch oven's $7.50, and answer the question the closed five-tool spine left open — whether a motorized tool can join a shelf built for things made to be repaired.
